Dr. Rex Riggs grew up in Wadsworth, Ohio, near Akron. He has three siblings: a twin brother, Roger who lives in Pickerington, a sister Becky who lives in Missouri, and an older brother, Gary who lives in Akron. Gary is the Veterinarian for the Akron Zoo and owns his own exotic/avian practice. Dr. Riggs graduated from The Ohio State University in 1985 and came to work at Best Friends in 1988. He firmly believes continuing education is important, and consequently attends multiple veterinary conferences yearly. He and Gary have attended veterinary conferences all over the world, including Australia, New Zealand, and Scotland.
Dr. Riggs volunteers much of his time to help in various ways with pets, their people and to better veterinary medicine. He is a board member of the North Central Region of Canine Companions for Independence. He is also on the board for The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Society, as well as the Small Animal Practitioner Advancement Board at The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine. Most recently, Dr. Riggs was approached by Embrace Pet Insurance to become a member of their veterinary advisory team. He accepted and now helps with their veterinary medical questions.
Dr. Riggs lives in Lewis Center with his wife Nancy, their two dogs, Boo and Maggie, and two cats, Franklin and Speeder. Outside of work Dr. Riggs is an avid golfer and enjoys travel and photography.
